About Thoracic Surgery of Northern California
Traditionally, thoracic surgery involved extensive and invasive surgery to treat benign and malignant disease of the lung, esophagus, and, mediastinum. In recent years, thoracic surgeons have begun to move away from conventional surgery toward a minimally invasive technique using Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS). This new standard of care provides additional treatment options for patients who are not surgical candidates. With early evaluations and diagnosis, we are able to successfully excise and remove lung cancer tumors and esophageal tumors, and treat esophageal disease all with shorter hospital stays, less pain, faster recovery, and better outcomes.
Additionally, Thoracic Surgery of Northern California offers High-Risk Lung Cancer Evaluations. Patients with risk factors for lung cancer such as long history of smoking or COPD can be seen at our clinic for a consultation and may be given further testing with a CT scan of the chest.
Our thoracic surgeons also offer treatment of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the palms and/or axilla using Thoracoscopic Sympathectomy, also called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy. This is a surgical procedure that destroys a small, specific section of the sympathetic nerve that controls sweating. Note that the sympathetic nervous system is separate from the nerves controlling sensation and motor function.
